The purpose of this site is to bring together readers and writers of good prose fiction who take books seriously. It’s a quiet place, without bells and whistles. Professionally written, intriguing and thoughtful electronic books (ebooks) exist on the web, but are not easy to find. We will also feature Print-0n-Demand (POD) books and paperback small press books, along with a some worthy large press books which have been dropped from publicity. And self-published, of course. So, in essence this is a showcase for great novels and short stories you will have trouble finding in most any (even independent) bookstores or on the web unless you already know the name of the author or the title. Here, you can hit a category (or a tag-or both) and it will list, from most recently posted to longest ago, everything in that category or tag. That’s the easiest way I found to set this up.
The world of New York and even small press publishing has changed. Publishers are looking for big sales on their books, and often, small presses are seeking a chance to sell to a big press. Many good books don’t make that kind of splash.
More prose fiction writers are deciding to forego the long and increasingly uncertain process of getting their novels or short story collections, via a committed, talented and thoughtful agent, to the right editor in the correct house. Since no one is consistently reviewing electronic and print-on-demand books (ebooks and PODs), this leaves readers with an untappable source for new, good work. There are huge numbers of books self-published daily, but where do you find the new fiction you hope for?
We start with this: writers who choose to submit at least the first 50 pages and a synopsis of their novels will be reviewed by other writers here. The standard is high–professionally edited and written work of high quality–whether its topic is humor or scorchingly deep. When the work is chosen and the author agrees to two simple commitments, he or she then enters a cooperative, solely on the basis of that submission (not always the entire book). As much as the author wishes (up to 50 pages) will be excerpted here, with a short comment by us or offsite-generated reviews, if they have any, and links set by the author to buy the book off-site. Books could also be bought through the main site links to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.
If anyone wishes to leave a comment for the site or a specific book, that, too, will be moderated. Each co-op member will read and review two new submissions per month to see if they are of quality and should be here. Because this is not a commercial venture, each co-op member will pay $30 per year so I can maintain this site. But no one pays and has her/his book listed. It needs to meet the criterion of professionalism. We’re not kidding about that.
This is a curated site, open for submission to any professional and careful novel (and short story collection) writer who has chosen to self-publish, or who has been published by a small press or even by a major press and yet bereft of a way to let the reading public find their book. See the submission guidelines if you are a writer.
If you are a reader, start anytime to look through categories, and click on your area of interest. We’ve tried to make the tag search relevant to only our tags. If that causes a problem, use the categories only. Novels will be listed newest to oldest on the site within the category you choose.
This is a bookstore of a kind, which will only make a dime from your purchase if you hit the associated links. We are here to sell nothing, just to display good writing for you to peruse. After that, it’s between you and your Kindle or Nook or your POD seller or… well, you get the idea.
We hope to be presenting new and wonderful fiction which not many people know about. But you will. And then your friends will. Welcome.
